Wije’winen Health Centre is committed to providing comprehensive and culturally relevant primary health care to the Urban Indigenous community of Kjipuktuk (Halifax Regional Municipality)

How to become a patient:

  1. Visit Wije’winen Health Centre with your health card and your proof of Indigenous identity (see below for alternative documentation types), to fill out the registration paperwork and book an appointment. Feel free to call 902-406-0851 if you have an questions before coming in. There are staff available to help with filling out the forms if needed.

    Please note: only patients or their legal guardians can make appointments, we cannot accept appointments made by others (such as family or friends).

  3. Come to your first appointment with any medications you take and any previous health records you have (you can also email, fax or drop off health records to us once you have booked your first appointment). Your intake appointment can take up to an hour so please plan accordingly.

Examples of acceptable forms of documentation include:

  • A copy of a valid Indian Status or Treaty card

  • Proof of enrolment as a Mi’kmaw of Nova Scotia through Wula na Kinu

  • A copy of a valid beneficiary card to an Inuit land claim region

  • A copy of a membership card from a Métis registry recognized by the Métis National Council (Métis Nation of Ontario, the Manitoba Métis Federation, the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, the Métis Nation of Alberta and the Métis Nation British Columbia)

  • A copy of a membership card from a Métis Settlement General Council community

  • Written confirmation of nationhood in a federally recognized band council which has its own citizenship code

  • A declaration of Indigenous (status or non-status) identity by the candidate with supporting documentation from either an official in a recognized Indigenous organization or a relative in an Indigenous community with any of the aforementioned forms of documentation.


These documents will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may be subject to verification. Applicants that meet all eligibility requirements shall be accepted at the discretion of any physician or nurse practitioner in consultation with the health director and clinical lead. Applicants that knowingly access or declare on behalf of someone knowingly accessing these services under false pretenses could be subject to legal repercussions.
